Tremane one step away from semi-finals

Wednesday, 28 July 2010

Tremane 1-15 Oran 2-7.

Tremane moved one step closer to the County senior hurling championship semi-finals following their impressive five points win over Oran on Friday evening.
Oran were missing several vital players and they did come within five points of Tremane but it was the concession of eleven points in the first half that did the damage and it was just too much for Oran to claw back at the end.
From the start Tremane were in control but had to wait until the fourth minute when Niall Kilroy sent over their first point of the game. Oran struggled to get possession and make it count. Gerry Fallon's sideline cut just veering wide at the last second. Tremane would have two further points on the board before Oran opened their scoring. Niall Keenan and Kilroy with a second before Fallon sent over a free from the best part of 110 metres.
From there Tremane controlled the game. Adrian Purcell, Mike Keaveney, Kilroy and two further points from Purcell had them eight points clear with four minutes left in the half. Purcell's second point was particularly impressive as he collected a pass from Sean Melia clean above his head before dispatching the ball over the bar.
Keaveney was ruling everything at centre half back and was cleaning up all around him. He sent over a point with a free before Oran finally got their second point as the game went into injury time. A free from Gerry Fallon was spilled by Brian McGarry but the Tremane keeper managed to clear the ball to Sean Melia who let the ball out. However David Varley who passed to Mike Dwyer who fired over the bar.
With the game now deep in injury time (due to an injury to Keith McDermott early in the first half), Kilroy collected a great pass from Frank Carr to fire over an excellent point and it left Tremane with a nine point lead as they went in at the break.
Any chance that Oran would come back in the second half was dismissed in clinical fashion in the first ten minutes when Keaveney continued where he left off with a good point. A minute later the game was all but up when Sean Melia passed to Niall Kilroy and the county star was ruthless in his execution to the net and with that Oran's championship hopes of making the semi-finals. Another Purcell point extending the lead to fourteen points with most of the second half remaining.
Oran did their best to make inroads into the Tremane lead with Gerry Fallon doing all that he could from midfield. His first point of the second half was followed by a free that just missed going into the Tremane net. But Oran are always good for a goal or two and with twenty minutes remaining David Concannon blocked an attempted clearance and finished to the net. There were now ten points between the teams but Oran were not finished yet. A line ball from Fallon was finished to the net by Mark Concannon and when Fallon scored an excellent point the gap closed to six points. Oran were back in the match and looking to go even further. A 65' from Fallon almost ended in the Tremane net were it not for a good save by Brian McGarry. Purcell's final point was also his side's as they repelled Oran's attacks in the final minutes.
The final score would be a point from John Lawless but Oran could not make any further progress as Tremane held out comfortably and they now can look to the county semi-finals with confidence.
