Four Roads win Junior Hurling Championship
Wednesday, 14 July 2010
Four Roads 0-15 Padraig Pearses 1-6.
FOUR ROADS captured the junior hurling championship for 2010, when they defeated their southern neighbours Pearses, in an exciting and enjoyable final at Athleague on Saturday evening last.
Played on a lovely playing surface with a stiff wind which aided Pearses in the first half, this game got off to a lively but low scoring start. When they went in at the break with Four Roads leading by 0-6 to 0-4 after playing against the wind, it looked ominous for Pearses and so it proved in the end.
Four Road midfielder John Rogerson got his side off to a great start with a lovely point from play after only 25 seconds. Further points by Padraig Mulry and Brendan Mannion, saw them three points up in as many minutes. A Thomas Sweeney free opened the Pearse's account in the 5th minute. Brendan Mannion scored his second point when he received a wonderful cross field pass from Padraig Mulry. Pearses replied with one of the scores of the game when Thomas Sweeney showed great skill to control a high ball and sent over a marvellous point to leave his side 2 points behind.
Lee Flynn reduced the margin to the minimum soon after, with a fine point form play. A pointed 50m free by John Rogerson restored the Four Roads 2 point lead. Then with 4 minutes to go in the first half Pearse's midfielder Pat Downey came storming through the middle and his fine shot destined for the top of the net was brilliantly turned over the bar by Four Roads keeper David Dowd. A fine point from a narrow angle by Four Roads full forward Robert Kelly, completed the first half scoring.
John Rogerson, as he did in the first half, got Four Roads off to a flyer when he pointed, this time, after only 40 seconds! Jamie Lawlor followed this with another great point from play to open up a 4 point margin. Leo Flynn pulled a point back for Pearses, only to see it cancelled out by a very good John Rogerson free from the right sideline. When Leo Flynn sent over another point for Pearse's after 9 minutes, it was to be their last score until the final minute.
The rest of the half belonged to the men from Four Roads, as they showed great guile and craft to stamp their authority on the game and go on to win comfortably. John Rogerson pointed a free from midfield, followed by lovely points from play by Robert Kelly and Jamie Lawlor. Another John Rogerson free left his side 0-13 to 0-6 ahead with just 8 minutes to go and at this stage there was no way back for a gallant Pearse's side. Robert Kelly and Brendan Mannion scored the final points for the winners, while substitute Frank Canning crashed a 20m free to the net for a late consolation goal for Pearse's.
