THE CORNAFULLA Ceilí Band surprised all at this year Ceilí Band competition at the recent Connacht Fleadh in Mohill County Leitrim.
The band competing against others from Sligo, Galway, Mayo and Leitrim branch beat nearly all around them to achieve second place in the under 12 section o the Ceili Bands competition on Saturday, July 3rd.
The band consists of seven members of the Ballinasloe branch and three of the Athlone branch of Comhaltas. Tom Gylnn on drums, James Milton on piano, Blaithín and Gráinne Beehan, Luk Corbett and Cora Hanrahan on fiddles, Aisling Moran on whislte, Jane Corbett on flute and Maria Corcoran and Ronan Hanrahan on button accordian.
The band is coached by Shane Cunniffe (also pictured above) who has pu mountains of effort into this band over the last few weeks and months and all on a voluntary basis.
He never expected to achieve such heights during the bands first year of competition and was delighted that the band is now through to the All Ireland Fleadh in Cavan in late August.
He hopes that the success of the Cornafulla Ceili Band will help promote traditional Irish music in the locality, the nearby towns of Ballinasloe and Athlone and the greater south Roscommon area.
