Councillors vote to disband HSE

Wednesday, 7 July 2010

THE MEMBERS of Roscommon County Council voted unanimously in favour of a motion calling for the disbandment of the HSE at their June meeting. Cllr Michael Mulligan said new criticisms of the HSE emerge every day. "I've never seen anything positive about the HSE. All it's done is put layers and layers of management on top of what's already there. They have managers and administrators for one in every six people in the organisation. Look what they've done to our country, they've butchered a lot of Irish women," Cllr Mulligan said.
Cllr Valerie Byrne seconded Cllr Mulligan's proposal. "When the old health boards existed there was somewhere we could complain to. The HSE has over 600 managers, that?s where all the money is going to," Cllr Byrne said. Cllr Paula McNamara also supported the proposal.
Cllr Seán Beirne said that in the past it was local politicians who had been accused of delaying the delivery progress in the health service. "The HSE has been a disgrace. People are sleeping on trolleys in hospitals and the Department of Health is managed by a minister who isn't responsible to anybody. The HSE has made some progress in cancer treatment but that is its only success, the HSE should be disbanded," Cllr Beirne said.
